VAST - SFOS 2020

During this year’s SF Open Studios, ArtSpan will be editing VAST videos to air in time for the SFOS season for the first 30 members to register at the PLUS level. Remaining SFOS Plus Registrants will have their videos edited and promoted through 2021.

ArtSpan developed the VAST program (Virtual Art Studio Tours) to help our artists broaden their audience while keeping engaged and connected with our art community through a widespread social media campaign.

ArtSpan will edit, share and promote artist videos that the artists shoot themselves of their workspaces, available work, and works in progress. Each video tour should include brief dialogue about your creative process and inspiration.

You will share video clips & photos with ArtSpan by loading to a provided Google Drive Folder. ArtSpan will take all footage to edit, format, add music, logos with links (including your website and Instagram pages) before distributing them on social media. ArtSpan premieres new VAST videos, one every Wednesday on IGTV, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and the ArtSpan website.

As the first 30 members to register at the PLUS level are noted, they will be assigned a hard deadline to send ArtSpan all necessary video clips and photos needed to create their VAST episode.

*We stress the importance of this deadline, for if your media is not received by your assigned date, the next person in line who has registered at the PLUS level will take your place and your video will not be made in time for the SFOS Season.*

Video Requirements:

  • Video can be filmed with a smartphone and must be filmed horizontally (hold phone sideways rather than vertically).
  • Record multiple clips, each 30 seconds to 1 minute long. ArtSpan will combine the best parts of each clip to create a cohesive 2-3 minute video.
  • Pause in between topics and thoughts. This makes it easier for us to edit the footage and splice it together cohesively.
  • Speak up and bring your phone in close enough range to record what you have to say clearly.
  • We highly recommend that you use headphones or a headset to capture the best audio possible. Doing so will dramatically reduce ambient noise.
  • Be conscious of balanced lighting (not too light or too dark) and be aware of shaking your camera while filming. These will contribute greatly to the professional feel of your video clips.
  • Share 10-15 clear, high resolution photographs (1024 x 768 pixels minimum) of your art, and 2-3 photos of you creating your art. We will edit these into the video.
  • Please provide 1-2 clear, high resolution photographs (1024 x 768 pixels minimum) headshots of yourself. These will be used to promote the video.
  • Provide at least 10-15 seconds of silence before starting your intro clip. That time does not count towards the 30 sec -1 min long portion of your clip
  • Make sure your video is recording before you start speaking. If you start mid-word or mid-sentence the messaging will not make it into your video.

What to capture in your video clips:

  • Divide visual representation between yourself, your workspace, and your artwork.
  • Keep communication info precise and on point with your art practice.
  • Friendly and accessible content presented with professional poise.
  • Works in progress as well as your available work
  • Yourself in the creative process making your art
  • Close up of your materials
  • Move around to different areas of your workspace. Don’t point the camera at the same angle for every clip. Give us some diverse images and perspective to work with.

What to talk about in your video clips:

  • Introduce yourself by name
  • Describe your medium (materials/process)
  • Tell us about your workspace
  • Where is it?
  • How long have you been there?
  • How does it work for you?
  • What is your favorite aspect of it?
  • What does a visitor to your studio walk away with knowing about you and your art?
  • What diversifies your artwork and makes it unique?
  • What is one word you would use to describe your aesthetic/style?
  • What is your inspiration or motivation to create your art?
  • What does your work convey to the viewer?
  • Answer the 3 most common questions you get asked during Open Studios.
  • Close with a clip  “thanks for taking a tour of my studio…..” or some sort of ending with a positive tone of encouragement for your Artist Community. Try not to make this too long, at maximum 10 seconds.
