Art is always a process of discovery for me. One of my goals as an artist is to coax viewers into noticing more details about their environment through the experience of looking at or remembering my paintings -- perhaps, if I'm successful, sharing or extending my own process of discovery. I have both figurative and abstract bodies of work. When I begin a new body of work, I feel like I am learning a new language.

TAMA GREENBERG's Artist Statement

“My artwork (paintings and monotypes) is composed of 3 elements with varying emphases: texture, color, and image. My basic medium is acrylic paint. Texture comes from the paint application and collage.  Imagery swings from cerebral landscapes to figurative to organic forms to abstraction. I combine predominantly bright colors with contrasting dark or muted tones to achieve a more complex effect, with transparent layers of unmixed paint used to create more intense colors. Color is very personal. I generally use colors that please me.

But I also approach art as a child, playing with color and shapes spontaneously, much like a large doodle, without a specific subject in mind.

Art to me is pure pleasure, the process being as important as the result.”

My focus is the human figure. My monotypes, colographs and linocuts are generally bright colors and abstracted images of the figure intended to evoke a recognizable feeling, thought or state of being. My etchings are more subdued in color and representational in style.

Artist Statement:

My work is the reflection of my environment which depicts the communion between nature and culture and their fragile balancing act. In my artwork I juxtapose the anatomy of the human body and of trees because of their intricate structure, the constant flow of energy and life carried by arteries and veins, branches and leaves conforming a complex unity of functions inscribed in a much larger and harmonious universe. As an artist using a visual vocabulary inspired in nature and nurture in the traditions of my cultural heritage as well as my appreciation of other cultures of the world I want to be a medium to express the continuity of life through changes in nature and the cycles of life and death where the past, the present and the future simultaneously coexist.

I've been a printmaker for more than 22 years. My first prints were silkscreens. Today I specialize in multiple plate etchings. For the most part my etchings tell the story of my growing up in a Latino household. Today, I'm still telling that story and I also have time to work on a series of etchings on comical dogs. My web sites are: xavierviramontes.com & mesart.com/xviramontes

Every “Body” tells a story. My figurative works explore dreams, reflections, thoughts, and memories that translates into narrative depictions through the use of body language. Thematically my work is very much about how our body movements tell stories, through conscious and unconscious signals, typically with greater eloquence than what verbal communication allows. Whether depicting a single figure or through the juxtaposition and overlapping of multiple figures which appear at first glance to be abstract, each piece stimulates an engaging dialog with the viewer. I express and communicate an idea, emotion or thought using a common thread of assured and sensual lines creating artworks that are peaceful to joyful, sensual to sexual, alluring to provocative. I see particular beauty in the strength and sensuality of the human form. Drawing regularly from live models allows me to depict the beauty of anatomy, proportion, balance and movement. The traditional methodology, however, produces works that are completely contemporary.
