I enjoy oil paint for its richness and subtlety, and its connection to art history. I use a variety of tools to make marks that suggest a mood or movement, brushes, scrapers, knives, squeegees, rollers. People often say my paintings are in motion and I experience the world like that. Nothing is static.

I started my career as an illustrator, and am trained classically to draw and paint. Drawing the figure from life continues to be a passion for me, and teaching painting for the last 25 years has deepened my ability to move my work in ways that pass the purely visual and suggest sensory or psychological realms.

Silence and unexplained areas are important in my finished paintings, in the hope that viewers can enter the work with their own histories and find their own stories.
