I grew up on the coast south of San Francisco in, what was then, a rural town. I've spent most of my life out of doors in nature where I find inspiration, solace and gratitude for all things natural. I've been drawing and painting since I was a young child, having inherited that art gene from my maternal grandfather who made his living as a commercial artist in the days of pen and ink. What captures my attention and inspires me to draw or paint is the nature of light and shadow, and nature itself as seen through that plurality. Whether it's the nuance in a shift of value and color temperature or strong dramatic accents I find the partnership of light and shadow compelling. The emotion that can be reflected through that combination doesn't need a narrative or specific subject to express itself.
