I began my career as a sculptor working in welded steel, wood and stone. I was derailed early on when I had no studio and made what I considered small silver sculptures. They were in a fashion show which led to magazine exposure and a costume jewelry business. Returning to San Francisco, I decided to return to my first love, sculpture, received my MFA from CCAC having fallen in love with clay. My work has evolved over the years from being colorful, humorous and provocative to becoming minimalist with a subtle use of color. My current work is on ongoing exploration of creating sculpture in clay. My work is hand built, primarily using low fire white clay and glazes. My primary focus is on form and what affect light and shadow have on those forms. I began experimenting with the repetition of form, how change in size, shape or color influenced these forms. I have subsequently minimalized the use of color so that most sculptures are various shades of white. This puts the focus on the forms. My latest works vary in size from large-scale installations to small freestanding sculptures. Some artworks I refer to as ceramic paintings, ceramic forms attached to wood panels. Others are ceramic forms installed directly on the wall. Contact me via email if you wish to schedule a private viewing of my sculptures. [email protected] In the meantime, I have begun a series of one-of-a-kind costume jewelry necklaces using beads that were left over from my days of having a costume jewelry business. It's been fun to create things in a different medium.
