I've always loved facial expressions, and I’m particularly interested in how drawing is able to manipulate and abstract them. In my work, faces and forms interact to build systems of movement and balance, which often makes for images in precarious positions between reality and abstraction. I like to experiment with graphite, exploring how different types of weight, from thread-thin lines to heavy objects, relate to one another. This gives me room to map out the composition as I go, and to experiment with a variety of ways of using empty space. I’ve always been drawn to horror and science fiction imagery, especially in 50’s film and television, and I often pull faces from these genres to use as theatrical reflections of uncertainty, anxiety, and awe.
