My imagery alludes to invisible human phenomena that merges bioscience and art. It has roots in my earlier laboratory career. Most of my work provides an essence or reflection of the internal human dynamic. It refers abstractly to the notion that humans are biologically, chemically, and spiritually wired; we are integrated beings who consume, sense, move, breathe, and hear. The work acknowledges the intangible nature of the biological forms maintaining our beings. A focus of my work is ambiguity between outer lives and inner homeostasis, the visible and invisible, image and shadow, exclusion and inclusion, all related to humanness. With a nod to surrealism, I often render visible the hidden forms within the body. I frequently use a historic process, cyanotype, that suggests a biomedical and chemical framework. It was originally developed for botanical studies and is reminiscent of radiologic images. These images are somewhat spontaneous and unpredictable, thereby creating works that are mysterious, contemplative, ethereal, and yet oddly familiar. Along with cyanotypes, my works may include of mixed media such as pastel, acrylic, and collage.
