I create oil paintings that raise awareness about composers identifying as women, particularly women of color. To address the paucity of public exposure to these composers, I use their music to fuel the creation of vibrant and lyrical worlds that stir the imagination. My process includes weaving together research on composers, analyses of their works, and written reflections in response to their compositions. As a dedicated reader of underrepresented mythologies and folklore, I combine my musical findings with a tapestry of stories (of which I often adapt) that highlight the greatness of multicultural Sheroes. Using a colour shaper, I then “carve” intricate designs that highlight this amalgamation of story and music into the paintings’ compositions. The resulting creations are songs in and of themselves, celebrating diverse composers, phenomenal women, and enchanting stories from around the world.
