Azucena Hernandez was born and raised in the Mission District of San Francisco, California. Once inspired by its vibrant murals and culture that surrounded her childhood, she now uses the dramatic social and cultural changes to the neighborhood to inspire her work. Through her use of photo-realistic images she presents to viewers the issues that affect the community both locally and nationally. Recently incorporating the traditional practice of pyrography into her work, she creates striking portraits of victims of society's faults. Finding an intersection between the violent process of burning onto a raw piece of wood and the injustices that cause pain to the community, forever leaving a mark and a memory.
