Artist Statement
Ramekon O'Arwisters
Commercial products are coded carriers of social and political attitudes in my art. Oreos join watermelon seeds, bananas, and women's handbags as the physical stand-ins for racial, sexual, and political prejudice. I engage ordinary objects of consumption to reveal their deeply rooted symbolism, an activity that offers personal and social catharsis.
O’Arwisters was a recipient of the prestigious Artadia Award and attended the Djerassi Resident Artists Program and the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vermont. He has exhibited artwork at the LGBT Center at Duke University, the Luggage Store Gallery, and the Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) both in San Francisco, California. O’Arwisters has received grants from the Queer Cultural Center (QCC), the San Francisco Foundation, and the San Francisco Arts Commission Cultural Equity Program in support of his work. He is an artist and curator in the San Francisco Bay Area.
I welcome the opportunity to collaborate with other artists in all media and other artistic forms; theater, performance art, or dance.
