2. “Recollections: Latina/Chicana Women’s Art”
Solo Mujeres Exhibition 2007
(February 16, 2007-San Francisco, CA) Once again the Solo Mujeres exhibition will be showcasing the creative works of emerging and established Latina artists from the bay area and the world. This year’s theme takes on a reflective tone, as the MCCLA celebrates its 30 year anniversary. The exhibit will showcase emerging artists with work from the last five years -- 2002-2007. The artists were asked to write about their mentor and explain how this person in relation to the Chicano Art Movement has had an impact on their artwork. Following is a list of artists from the Chicano Movement in the U.S, for example: Judy Baca, Amalia Mesa-Bains, Ester Hernandez , Patssi Valdez and the Mujeres Muralistas.
We are very honored to have Consuelo Mendez visiting from Caracas, Venezuela to give a performance on Friday the 16th, and a workshop on Saturday the 17th. Consuelo was one of the founding members of Las Mujeres Muralistas, the first Latina artist collective in the United States. She has remained very active in the Latino Arts Community participating in exhibitions worldwide, and teaching workshops all over Central and North America. The relationship between the body and the visual arts has become more and more relevant in her personal expression and her teaching, opening the way to her creative research. Also, she has begun to develop a line of work in art therapy.
Nueve Mujeres Print Project
Juan R. Fuentes/ Mission Grafica, Director
Participating Artists: Monica Martinez, Carolina Lucero, Maria Bartola Mejia, Viviana Paredes, Susana Aragon, Anna Simpson, Gabriela Lujan, and Michelle Ramirez
In celebration of our 30th Anniversary, nine Latina women artists were invited to come to Mission Grafica and be part of creating an original serigraph print. This is the first time that an all women’s portfolio has been created at MCCLA. All nine women artists come from different Latin American backgrounds working in a variety of disciplines, and were screen printing for the first time. The project has taken approximately a year and a half, and the theme was kept open to explore the Latin American experience from a woman’s perspective. A very interesting and beautiful portfolio has been created. We invite the public to come and see these wonderful prints during our opening:
