ArtSpan Announcements, Reminders & Updates
1. Letter from Chairman of the Artspan Board of Directors

Greetings and best wishes for the New Year.

The Board of Artspan and our staff looks forward to an extremely busy year. We have new and enthusiastic Board members and a new slate of officers eager to strengthen ArtSpan’s programs. We are in the process of hiring a new Executive Director and will be adding staff as well. Therese Martin, our former program manager whom many of you know is acting as interim ED. Therese with the help of your Board has moved quickly to maintain a smooth transition of the Open Studios Registration process and we expect all materials to be sent out by the end of February. We are also in the process of finalizing our schedule and will publish our calendar shortly.

We have a new slate of officers; In addition to me, Michael Yochum was elected Vice Chairman and chairman of the Finance committee, Patter Hellstrom, Treasurer and Vicki Shipkowitz, Secretary. Brian Bonner, our most recent Board Chairman will remain an ex –offico member of the Executive Committee. In addition, David Steele, a member of the financial community and an avid supporter of the arts has joined the Board.

We are saddened by the resignation of John Erlich, former Board president for many years. We will miss John and his sage advice; hopefully we can continue his record of achievement.

ArtSpan works because of the dedication of our supporters. As Brian said in his letter last month, we are a diverse organization and have a place for every volunteer. Come to our events, join a committee – it’s a fun and rewarding experience.

John F. Melvin

    1. Glen Park Festival Now Accepting Submissions

It has been announced that the 10th annual Glen Park Festival will take place on April 29th, 2007! It's been an exciting year in downtown Glen Park. Many new shops and eateries have opened, and there will soon welcome a new grocery store and library branch.

The Glen Park Festival Committe is currently accepting applications from individuals who would like to exhibit at the festival. If any artists or craftspeople would like to apply, please do not hesitate to contact Rebecca MurrayMetzger, vendor booth coordinato for the Glen Park Festival Committee at 415-596-6948 or ralysn@aol.com

    2. Call For Submissions: Help Create the Shapetionary!

What is the Shapetionary? It’s a visual index of objects.

It started from looking at the dictionary and wondering why some words are illustrated and others aren’t, then thinking it would be interesting to illustrate the whole dictionary, or all the object nouns...then organize them by shape.

So I extracted all, or most (aprox 9500), of the object nouns, now I am setting out to get them illustrated by as many different people as possible. I am interested in our subjective/collective understandings of objects. So far over 550 people are participating, I estimate that between 1200-1500 drawers are needed.

That’s a brief description. So, if you are interested in illustrating some words, email velvetbicycle and you will receive a list of 6-8 words, along with complete instructions.
    All participants will be acknowledged.

Questions and comments can be directed to: Margaret Flood, velvetbicycle@hotmail.com
