ArtSpan Announcements, Reminders & Updates
1. Letter From ArtSpan Board of Directors Chair, Brian Bonner

Lessons learned and new initiatives are the ArtSpan mantra for December and January. These are the months when we step back from the year’s activities and analyze results. First we take a look at the feedback from the meetings held in early 2006, the Community Forums, the staff retreat, and the Board of Directors’ retreat. How well did we meet the concerns of those groups? Were we able to take on the suggested new initiatives? What items do we still need to address? Then we add the results of the one-on-one surveys of artists during Open Studios, the results of the Survey Questionnaire (if you haven’t participated in the survey please do so now –insert link-.), and our self-assessments of all the year’s activities. And, we add the financial results. Were we good custodians of the public’s investment in ArtSpan?

Of course our analysis doesn’t always result in a clear direction. The demands of our constituencies often conflict. One thing is certain – change!  The Board of Directors is committed to improvement. We are actively exploring how we can better serve the artist, the public, and the youth of San Francisco.

You can help with that change. The Open Studios Committee handles all aspects of Open Studios. Join it. The Art for City Youth group works on our outreach to schools. Join it. You have marketing, public relations, development, web skills? We have a place for you. If you would like a shorter term commitment join the Art Auction Committee, the Selections Committee, or the Private Preview Committee. Your feedback need not be a one-time survey. It can be an ongoing dialogue. Help us create change.

3. Naked At Creativity Explored

San Francisco’s premiere gallery of artwork by artists with developmental disabilities

It may be winter, but the artists of Creativity Explored are stripping
things down to the bare essentials in a new exhibition of original artwork
entitled "Naked." Nude figure drawing has been a staple of art education for
hundreds of years, but it was a definite first at this studio for artists
with developmental disabilities. In sessions with live professional art
models over several weeks, the artists worked on classic exercises for
drawing the human body. Many of the resulting charcoal and pen and ink
sketches will be on display and available for purchase. The clothing
optional theme takes a humorous turn with Antonio Benjamin’s "Nudes with Leg
Warmers" and Peter Cordova’s interpretation of the famous Avedon photo of
actress Nastassja Kinski wrapped only in a large snake.

Call for Entries; Submit Your Art Work

1. COMPETITION 2006: PHOTOGRAPHY & ART

CALL FOR ENTRIES:
www.PhotoContest2006.com

Presented by TCB CAFE Publishing & Media LLC

Deadline: December 15, 2006

Finalists will be announced on: February 1, 2007

PURPOSE
The Photography Competition / Art Competition 2006 is an international contest organized by TCB-Cafe Publishing of San Francisco. The contest aims to develop and raise the visibility of photographic and creative graphics talent, in the form of a competition and the resulting book publication. The culmination will be a beautiful cloth-bound photographic book, showcasing the competition winners, and gracing the libraries of museums, galleries, individuals and collectors.

PHOTO CONTEST / ART CONTEST THEME
The 2006 photo contest / art contest has two separate book themes. In this Call for Entries, submissions may interpret these themes broadly:

1) A Smile is Worth a Thousand Words (photography)
DESCRIPTION: Humans are some of the only living creatures that can smile, and for that reason smiles are unique. Some may even say they are a gift from beyond. But smiles can mean much more than just happiness and mirth. They can be mysterious, fashionable, sexy, deceptive, inviting, friendly, or even alarming. They can indicate good health or bad, and can make the recipient's day unfold in joy, or descend into misery. Smiles must be interpreted, and those interpretations can be worth hundreds, if not thousands, of words. (...and not all of them need come from close-up portraits)

Note: "A Smile is Worth a Thousand Words" is a photographs only contest. Images can be closeups, portraits, full bodies, or even group images

2) Super Heroes (photography & art)
DESCRIPTION: Super heroes have always existed, both real and imagined. Photography and art allows the artist to now capture and illustrate those fictional and non-fictional persons (and animals) as never before. Photographers and illustrators are invited to show us the Super Heroes in our world, or not of it.

Note: "Super Heroes" is for photography, painting, graphic arts, comics, manga, and photo-essay/journalism. The topic is also very open to your interpretation - entries based in reality/real life people, historic figures or fantasy (even "winged" characters can be considered super heroes). Use your imagination.

PRIZES
Selected images will be published in the books "Smile" or "Super Heroes" by TCB-Cafe Publishing. Selected images will also appear in a TCB-Cafe Publishing exhibit on the contest's theme. A total of 40 First and Second Place Finalists will be selected per theme.

First Place Finalists (20 will be awarded):
• First Place winners will be published in the Deluxe Editions of the books, "Smile" or "Super Heroes"
• First Place winners will also receive a numbered copy of the Deluxe Editions of "Smile" or "Super Heroes," as well as credited in all press materials sent to the media, agencies, and collectors.
Second Place Finalists (20 will be awarded):
• Second Place winners will be published in the Deluxe Editions of the books, "Smile" or "Super Heroes"
• Second Place winners will also receive a numbered copy of the Deluxe Editions of "Smile" or "Super Heroes."
• Second Place winners will also receive a 30% discount on copies of the Deluxe Editions of "Smile" or "Super Heroes"
Honorable Mentions (TBD)

DEADLINE
All entries to the photo contest / art contest must be postmarked by December 15, 2006. Entries cannot be accepted afterwards unless the deadline is officially extended. Finalists will be announced on February 1, 2007. Finalists will be posted on the Competition website. All entrants are required to check that website to determine status.

2. Wish You Were Here: A Call For Bay Area Souvenirs

In the world of ephemera every place has its souvenir.
A memory for the tourist that arrives and departs, a collection of images
and mementos to take home and revisit, the souvenir encompasses
expectation and recollection of places, people, and adventures.
Although often ignored, souvenirs are representations of the places we
inhabit, written in the familiar dialect of sno-globes and postcards. But
souvenirs also navigate more intimate geographies, of excitement,
melancholy, and fondness. Grafted onto personal memory, they pine for a
place left, a time gone. From the quirky world of mass-produced trinkets
and collectibles to the realm of one-of-a-kind precious mementos, from the
embarrassing to the delightful, souvenirs speak the language of
representation.

City|Space is calling artists, tourists, residents, visitors, place
experts, and place lovers
to submit their interpretations of and ideas for new souvenirs of places
in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Subject: San Francisco Bay Area, California, USA
Souvenirs can recollect an array of subjects:
As obvious as San Francisco, as unexpected as Redwood City
As well-known as the Golden Gate Bridge, as surprising as a hotdog stand
in Emeryville.
As famous as Jack Kerouac, as anonymous as your local mechanic
As legendary as Dungeness crab, as ordinary as a burrito

What: A creative product reinterpreting the traditional souvenir.
From a coffee mug to a walking tour, from a postcard series to a personal
assemblage, from a video collage to a song, from a reproducible idea to a
unique sculptural object.
All media accepted.
One-of-a-kind pieces, a series and potentially reproducible objects: all
accepted.

Who: Anyone who has visited, dreamed of, read about, or is a resident of the
San Francisco Bay Area.
Artists of all backgrounds, residents, tourists, visitors, place experts,
and place lovers.

Submission Guidelines:
Proposals should be submitted in the form of a single postcard.
Please describe your idea on a postcard and mail it to:
CITY|SPACE
P.O.Box 77114
San Francisco, CA 94107-7114
For complete submission guidelines please visit our website
www.city-space.org

Timeline:
1. Postcard Proposals Submission:
Must be postmarked by February 16, 2007.
Postcards will be included in an on-line exhibition in Spring 2007. 2.
Souvenir Exhibition:
Selected participants will be asked to produce and submit their souvenirs
for participation in a gallery exhibition in the Bay Area, Summer 2007.
Postcard entries will also be exhibited.
Selected participants notified: April 1st, 2007
Deadline for final submission: June 1st, 2007
Things that might happen next:
