Artist Statement

Creating art is akin to breathing for me. It is constant and essential. My paintings evolve as a rhythm, a ritual in a dance of colors, textures and lines that capture and transform my normal flow of time. My inspiration is drawn from my Caribbean heritage and exploring the myths of culture and Diasporas. In A Living Ritual series my artwork highlights the experience of being an “in between” an individual who embodies ethnic and cultural fluidity. My canvases come alive with color as photographed individuals are captured in their familiar, a moment in time then lifted out, relocated to an otherworldly, elemental scape. This current body of work highlights the duality created between transposed subjects and their unfurling new environments. While blurring the lines between photography and paint my imagery pinpoints the experience of being “here and there at the same time”. My artwork highlights that hybrid space and hybrid self and encourages the “in between” to emerge from a blank canvas into it’s own colorful expression.
